Rosshalde deals with the failed marriage of the protagonist, painter Johann Veraguth and his wife Adele. Pierre is the only thing which links Johann and Adele, and when he becomes very ill, the couple becomes somewhat closer.

Unfortunately, his views are so dated. The translator did a wonderful job too but Hesse is a great writer no matter what the story.

I love the Hesse books that I have read but I have not read this. I’m glad I had never heard of this minor Hesse work but saw at at the library and was seduced by the author’s reputation. I adored both of them. He gets up very early every morning, paints until noon, then takes lunch with his wife and son and later paints again until the evening.

About Rosshalde, Hedmann especially like that Hesse realistically more realistic than Anne Karenina in my opinion portrays how a marriage is genuinely uncomfortable and a family profoundly unhappy. In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later.
