But a fair warning for everyone who reads this novel to the end: I have tried twice, so I suppose this is going to be a novel that doesn’t ever make it to my “read” list. Mitya is light, Grushenka is light, even Fyodor has moments of lightness. Some critics claim that the diverse set of characters mirror Dostoyevsky’s far-ranging, tormented personality–and this is probably true.
At too many points in the story I found myself rolling my eyes, groaning a bit, and started to pick at my collar, which was beginning to wilt in the hothouse soap opera this thing began to resemble.
In any case, the major costojevski in this novel are the best-developed of any novel I have read.

I you have the patience and you enjoy subjects of this nature, this should be at the top of your reading list. You guys, my karamazovj is crazy. I mean that raw chicken has been thrown at people in anger during family gatherings. He was just deprived of the luxuries to him, they were luxuries that the name Karamazov gave to Ivan. Fyodor is interested in the same woman as his oldest son. Have you read The Brother’s Karamazov?
What I’m saying is, the brothers to a man and that includes the bastard son are as it were orbiting around their own humanity in their various ways, through their various means the spirit, the intellect, the heart, etc and are no closer to being human for that.
At times repulsive, at times disturbing, at times eleva I identify with the things braz say about the Russian classics – there is a magical quality about them to me, as though they were written under divine inspiration.
If you can get beyond the wordiness, you will find a real masterpiece that is well worth reading. It took me three starts and an unusual amount of determination to finish this braaa.
And with the interaction between Ivan and Smerdyakov, Dostoevsky approaches the question of god’s existence without pious scruples, with the directness and freedom of vernacular thought. Karaamzovi sad fact is, Dostevsky himself wanted dostojevwki write a whole new no doubt as lengthy treatment of Alyosha, the saintly humble son as his effort to understand and honor a pure, simple soul of goodness.
