In an impressive novel of closing arguments, Schlink provides the perfect rear view on an inglorious revolution. With his professional background in law, Bernhard Schlink has always carried the precision of an advocate summing up before the court of history. In an amazingly short space Schlink’s characters do a lot of soul-searching, mostly comparing what they had dreamed their lives For such a short book there is really a lot to absorb here.


The Reader is the story of a teenager who walks without caution into a sexual relationship with an older woman, having no idea what effect this carnal intoxication will have on him. There is a lot going on in this short book, but the author was able to connect the storylines well and in a way that made sense.

A shower of questions issues from his mouth: Diogenes Verlag, Marchpp. Are the people implied in revolutions fighting for common good or only for an ideal in which situation, if you cannot reach an ideal without killing people, shouldn’t you rather be considered a part of a more largely defined “homo homini lupus” group?

The idea behind the novel is so very good but I feel Schlink failed to deliver it with the proper gravitas and depth the subject deserved. Is that the cleverness of the novel….

Oh my God, I don’t even have the words! The villa and the surrounding park act as the wocheneende and arena for the weekend guests and their discussions.
